Advantage+ is Meta’s automated campaign system. For e-commerce, Advantage+ Shopping Campaigns. For lead generation, Advantage+ Audience. For apps, Advantage+ App Campaigns. The pattern is the same: you provide assets and an objective, Meta controls everything else.

It works. When it’s set up correctly. The problem is that Meta makes it seem easier to configure than it really is, and incorrect configurations cost money in ways that aren’t obvious.

What Advantage+ needs to work well

The system needs three things to learn how to optimise correctly: sufficient conversion data (the minimum is 50 optimisation events per week for the model to learn at a reasonable pace), high-quality assets (Advantage+ can generate text variants and crop images automatically, but the quality of the original asset is the ceiling of what it can do), and a well-configured pixel with Conversions API.

The pixel and the Conversions API: why it matters so much

After Apple’s iOS 14.5update in 2021,Meta’s browser pixel could no longer reliably track conversions on Apple devices. For any business whose audience includes a significant proportion of iPhone users (which in Spain accounts for around 40% of traffic), this means that conversions reported in Ads Manager are undercounted.

The Conversions API (CAPI) sends conversion events directly from the server, without relying on the browser or the device’s cookie policies. It is more reliable, more complete, and is the standard Meta recommends.

Implementing CAPI correctly requires access to the server or CMS: there are native connectors for Shopify, WooCommerce and some other platforms. For bespoke websites, it requires the implementation of an endpoint that sends events to the Meta API.

Without CAPI properly implemented, the Advantage+ model is optimising with incomplete data, which leads to suboptimal distribution decisions.

Advantage+ audiences: how to set them up properly

In Advantage+ Audience, Meta has full control over the audience. You cannot define demographic or interest segments. The only thing you can do is provide advantage+ existing customers audiences (your current customers) and define whether you want the system to exclude them (to reach new audiences only) or include them (for retargeting combined with prospecting).

The highest-quality signal is your customer list uploaded as a Custom Audience. The larger the list, and the more it represents your best customers, the better the model learns to find similar users.

The trap: Advantage+ can spend much of its budget on retargeting (users who already know the brand) because those users convert more easily and the model favours them to meet the objective. If you want pure prospecting (new audiences), you need to explicitly exclude retargeting audiences.

How to measure the real performance of Advantage+

Meta’s Ads Manager always overestimates the performance of its own campaigns. The default attribution window (7 days click, 1day view) includes many conversions that would have happened without the ad.

To measure the real impact:

Incrementality testing: Meta has a native lift testing tool that lets you create a control group that does not see the ads during a set period, and compare conversions between the exposed group and the control group. The difference is the real incremental impact.

More conservative attribution window: changing the attribution window to 7 days click (without view-through) gives a more conservative but more honest picture of the impact.

Cross-reference with CRM: if the conversions reported in Meta do not roughly correspond to the opportunities created in the CRM in the same period, there is an attribution problem to investigate.
