About this tool

This calculator works with letters, not just numbers: it simplifies expressions, expands brackets and powers, factors polynomials, solves equations and finds derivatives and indefinite integrals symbolically. It is useful for checking algebra and calculus homework, revising before an exam or making sure a formula you have rearranged by hand is still equivalent.

Choose the operation from the top bar: Simplify, Expand, Factor, Solve, d/dx (derivative) or ∫ (integral). Type the expression into the Expression field; to solve, differentiate or integrate, set the variable in the “var” box. Press Calculate or Enter. The result is shown in maths notation and as plain text you can copy. For equations, the “≈ Approx.” button switches between exact and decimal solutions. The Examples give you syntax ideas.

Everything is worked out in your browser with the nerdamer library and displayed with KaTeX; your expressions are not sent to any server. Use * to multiply and ^ for powers. The calculator shows the final answer, not the intermediate steps. Some integrals and high-degree equations have no closed form or go beyond the engine, in which case you will see an error message.

Frequently asked questions

How do I solve a quadratic equation?

Choose Solve, type the equation with an equals sign, such as x^2 + x - 6 = 0, and press Calculate. You will get both solutions, x = 2 and x = -3.

What is the difference between expanding and factoring?

They are opposites: expanding turns (x+1)^2 into x^2 + 2x + 1, while factoring does the reverse, writing a polynomial as a product of factors.

Does it show step-by-step working?

No, it gives the final answer. It is ideal for checking whether you reached the right result; if not, go back over your steps or try simplifying parts separately.

Do integrals include the constant of integration?

Yes. The ∫ operation finds indefinite integrals and adds + C to the result. It does not evaluate definite integrals between limits.
