About this tool
A full scientific calculator for when your phone’s one falls short: trigonometry in degrees or radians, common and natural logarithms, powers, roots of any degree, factorials, absolute value and modulo. It is handy for maths and physics homework, checking engineering formulas, or quick sums involving constants such as the speed of light or the Avogadro constant.
Pick DEG or RAD at the top depending on whether you work in degrees or radians. Enter the calculation with the buttons or your keyboard and press = or Enter. Const opens a searchable list of mathematical, physical and chemical constants ready to insert; Ans reuses the last result and EE enters scientific notation. History keeps your last 20 calculations: tap one to bring it back. Escape clears everything.
Calculations run in your browser using the mathjs library; nothing is sent to a server and the history is lost when you close the page. Results show up to 10 significant figures and switch to scientific notation when they are very large or very small. It does not do symbolic maths or draw graphs: use the algebra calculator and the graphing calculator for that.
Frequently asked questions
Why doesn’t sin(30) give 0.5?
You are probably in RAD mode, which reads 30 as radians. Press DEG to work in degrees and you will get 0.5.
What is the difference between log and ln?
log is the base-10 logarithm and ln is the natural logarithm, base e (about 2.718). For example, log(100) = 2 and ln(e) = 1.
How do I work out a cube root?
Use the ʸ√x button, which types nthRoot(: add the number and the degree separated by a comma, such as nthRoot(27, 3), then press =. You can also raise to the power 1/3 with xʸ.
Can I use my computer keyboard?
Yes: digits, + − * /, brackets, % and ^ can be typed directly. Enter calculates, Backspace deletes the last character and Escape clears the display.
