CRO (Conversion Rate Optimization) is the discipline of increasing the percentage of visitors who complete the target action on your website. It is the perfect complement to traffic acquisition: any improvement in conversion multiplies the return on all the advertising investment you are already making.
Why CRO is the most profitable thing you can do
If your website converts at 2% and you manage to raise it to 3%, you’ve increased the effectiveness of your entire marketing by 50% without spending an extra euro on acquisition. What previously brought you 100 clients a month now brings you 150.The advertising budget is the same. The team is the same. You’ve simply optimised the landing page.
That is the promise of CRO. The reality is that it requires a disciplined process — it is not magic.
The methodology that works
1. Analytics and real behaviour: install tools that show how visitors behave (Hotjar, Microsoft Clarity, FullStory). Heatmaps, session recordings, conversion funnels. Without this data, hypotheses are guesswork.
2. Identify the point of greatest drop-off: at each step of the funnel there is a percentage of loss. Focus efforts on the step that loses the most in absolute terms, not on marginal improvements to steps that already work well.
3. Data-based hypothesis: "I think changing the CTA will improve conversion" is not a useful hypothesis. "I can see that 60% of users scroll to the form but only 15% fill it in; I think the friction is in the phone field — I’m going to make it optional to validate" is.
4. A/B test with sufficient sample: changes that appear to be winners can be statistical noise. The basic rule: a minimum of 100 conversions per variant to consider significance.
5. Documentation of learnings: every test produces knowledge, whether it wins or loses. Documenting what has been tested, what has worked and what has not, avoids repeating pointless tests and builds a knowledge base of your audience’s behaviour.
The 10 changes with the greatest impact
We covered these in detail in our guide to web design for conversion. In brief: clear hero headline, single and specific CTA, loading speed, social proof in the right place, form with minimum fields, mobile-first design, specific service page per service, chat at the right moment, visible differential value proposition, user behaviour tracking.
