About this tool
Before you record, it pays to know how long the text will run. A 20-second radio ad, a short social video, the voice-over for a corporate film, a council speech or a best man’s toast all have a time slot, and running over means cutting at the last minute. This calculator estimates how long your text takes to read aloud, so you can tighten the script before you step up to the microphone.
Paste your script into the box. The speaking time is highlighted at the top, in minutes and seconds, together with the pace used. Underneath you get words, characters, sentences and paragraphs, plus the silent reading time. Cut or add lines and watch the duration change live; “Copy stats” copies every figure for your production notes.
The estimate uses 150 words per minute, the usual pace for clear, unhurried delivery. A voice-over artist doing an advert may go faster and a speech with pauses slower, so always do a read-through out loud. Pauses, music and sound effects are not included. Your text never leaves your browser.

How many words fit in a 30-second radio ad?
At 150 words per minute, about 75 words; a 20-second spot takes around 50. A fast voice-over artist can fit 10 to 15% more.
How many words per minute should I speak in a presentation?
Between 120 and 160 words per minute is comfortable for an audience. Slower sounds sluggish, and above 170 it becomes hard to follow.
How long is a 1,000-word speech?
About 6 minutes 40 seconds at 150 words per minute. Add time if you expect applause or will be showing slides.
Can I use it to time a YouTube or TikTok video?
Yes, for the spoken part. Add any shots without voice, captions-only sections or music separately.
