Compare two texts and see the differences
Compare two versions of a text and highlight what was added, removed or changed.
About this tool
Paste two versions of the same text and you will immediately see which lines were added and which were removed. It is useful for reviewing edits someone made to a contract or press release, comparing two drafts of an article, finding what changed between two config files or checking whether two lists really are identical.
Type or paste the original into Old text and the new version into New text; you can also use Open to load a text file (TXT, MD, CSV, JSON, HTML, CSS and more) or the paste-from-clipboard button. Below, under Differences, added lines appear in green with a + and removed lines in red with a −, alongside the line numbers from each version. Word wrap breaks long lines and Copy patch copies the result.
The comparison runs in your browser and your texts are not sent anywhere. It compares whole lines: if a single word changes, you will see that line removed and its new version added, without the exact word being marked. Files over 5 MB are not opened, and texts with many thousands of lines can take a while to process.
Frequently asked questions
How do I compare two Word documents?
Copy the text from each document and paste it into each side; the tool does not open .docx files directly. That compares the content, but not the formatting such as bold, styles or images.
Why is a line that looks the same marked as different?
Because the comparison is exact: a trailing space, a tab instead of spaces or a straight quote instead of a curly one is enough for two lines not to match.
What is the patch that gets copied?
It is the result as plain text: each line starts with + if it was added, - if it was removed and two spaces if it is unchanged. It resembles the diff format developers use and is easy to paste into an email or a ticket.
Can I compare source code?
Yes. You can open .js, .ts, .css, .html, .json, .yaml and other text files, and the view uses a monospaced font with line numbers. For whole projects, a version control tool such as Git will serve you better.
