About this tool
The font explorer lets you see what a typeface looks like before you install it or use it on a website. Open a TTF, OTF, WOFF or WOFF2 file and see it applied to your own text, to sample lines covering capitals, lowercase, numerals and punctuation, and in a size waterfall. It is useful for checking downloaded fonts, comparing versions or reviewing a type commission.
Drag the file onto the drop area, click to choose it or paste it from the clipboard. In “Preview”, type any text you like and pick a size from 12 to 96 px. Below that you will find the “Sample texts”, a “Size waterfall” from 12 to 64 px, the file name and an indicative PostScript name, and under “CSS usage” an @font-face block you can copy and adapt.
The font is loaded in your browser through the FontFace API and is never uploaded to a server. For now the tool does not read the file's internal tables: it does not list glyphs, licence, designer or OpenType features, and the PostScript name is derived from the file name. If the file is damaged or is not a font, you will see a warning.
Frequently asked questions
How can I preview a font without installing it?
Open the file in this tool: it is loaded only in the browser tab for previewing and is not installed on your system. Close the tab and it is gone.
What is the difference between TTF, OTF and WOFF2?
TTF and OTF are desktop formats, and OTF can hold PostScript outlines. WOFF and WOFF2 are compressed versions for the web, with WOFF2 being the smallest.
How do I use a custom font on my website?
Host it on your server, ideally as WOFF2, and declare it with @font-face in your CSS. The “CSS usage” section gives you a template with the format already filled in.
Can I use any font I download?
Not always: it depends on the licence, which may restrict web or commercial use. Check the licence that came with the file; this tool does not read it.
