Sort lines alphabetically
Sort the lines of a list A to Z, Z to A or by length.
About this tool
This tool puts the lines of any list into alphabetical order: customer names, keywords, products, towns, references or glossary entries. It uses proper language-aware sorting rather than raw character codes, so “Émile” sits next to “Emma” instead of being pushed to the end, and upper- and lowercase words are sorted together instead of all capitals coming first, which is what many basic sorters do.
Paste your list, one entry per line, and press “Sort lines A to Z”. The Lines panel underneath has more options: “Sort Z–A” for reverse order, “By length” to go from the shortest line to the longest, “Reverse order” to flip the list as it stands, and “Remove duplicates” to keep each entry once. Copy the result with the button at the top.
The list is sorted in your browser and never sent to a server. Sorting is alphabetical, not numeric: “10” comes before “2” because characters are compared one by one, so pad numbers with leading zeros (“02”, “10”) if your lines start with them. Blank lines end up at the top; remove them first with “Remove empty lines”.
Frequently asked questions
Why does “10” come before “2”?
Because the sort is alphabetical and compares the first character: “1” comes before “2”. Add leading zeros (“02”, “10”) so numbers sort as you’d expect.
Is sorting case-sensitive?
Capitals and lowercase aren’t split into separate blocks: “apple”, “Apple” and “Avocado” stay together. Between two otherwise identical words, the lowercase one comes first.
Can I sort by the second column of a CSV?
No, the tool sorts by the whole line starting from the first character. Use a spreadsheet to sort by another column.
How do I sort a list and remove duplicates at the same time?
Press “Sort lines A to Z”, then “Remove duplicates” in the Lines panel. Sorting first also makes any near-duplicates easy to spot.
