Capitalise the first letter of every word in your text.
About this tool
This tool capitalises the first letter of every word and lowercases the rest. It is useful for tidying lists of names that arrive in CAPITALS or all lowercase from a web form, preparing product or place names for a catalogue, or quickly producing a title-style heading. Accented letters are handled properly, so “josé álvarez” becomes “José Álvarez”.
Paste your text or list, one entry per line if you like, and press “Capitalise words”. A word is anything that starts with a letter or digit and runs to the next space, so opening punctuation is respected: “(hello there)” becomes “(Hello There)”. Afterwards you can copy the result, sort it with “Sort A–Z” or remove repeated lines from the Lines panel.
The text is processed in your browser and never sent to a server. The tool capitalises every word without exception, including short words such as “of”, “and” or “the”, which most title-case style guides keep lowercase, so check headings by hand. Hyphenated words only get a capital on the first part.
Frequently asked questions
Is this the same as title case?
Not exactly. Style guides such as AP or Chicago leave short words (a, of, the, and) in lowercase unless they come first; this tool capitalises every word, so tweak those by hand.
Can it fix names typed in all caps?
Yes: “MARY O’NEILL” becomes “Mary O’neill”. Names with internal capitals, such as McDonald or O’Neill, need a quick manual fix.
What happens to acronyms like BBC or NASA?
They become “Bbc” and “Nasa”, because the rest of each word is lowercased. Restore them by hand afterwards.
Does it handle hyphens and apostrophes?
A word runs to the next space, so “well-known” becomes “Well-known” and “rock’n’roll” becomes “Rock’n’roll”.
