About this tool
BMP is an uncompressed format that today is used mainly for compatibility: industrial or embroidery software, older Windows programs, microcontroller displays, retro games or electronics projects that read pixels directly. If an application asks you for a .bmp file, you can create one here from almost any image without installing an editor.
Drop your image onto the upload area; BMP is already selected as the output. Under “Bit depth” choose 24-bit, the most compatible option with no transparency, or 32-bit, which adds an alpha channel. If the device needs exact dimensions, set them under “Resize” using “Dimensions” mode. Press “Convert to BMP” and download the file, or a ZIP if you converted several.
The conversion runs in your browser without uploading your images. BMP is uncompressed: a 1920 × 1080 image at 24-bit takes about 6 MB, so reduce the dimensions if you do not need that much resolution. 24-bit BMPs fill transparency with white. The tool does not produce 1, 4, 8 or 16-bit BMPs or palette-based files.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between 24-bit and 32-bit BMP?
24-bit stores colour only (red, green and blue) and opens in any program. 32-bit adds an alpha channel for transparency, though some older programs ignore it.
Why is the BMP file so large?
Because it uses no compression and stores every pixel as-is. A Full HD image at 24-bit is about 6 MB, compared with a few hundred KB as a JPG.
Can I make a monochrome or 8-bit BMP?
No, the tool only writes 24-bit and 32-bit BMPs. For 1, 4 or 8-bit palette images you will need an editor such as GIMP.
Does BMP lose quality compared with the original?
No. Since it is uncompressed, the BMP stores exactly the pixels of the source image.
