About this tool
Converting a JPG to PNG makes sense when you will edit an image repeatedly and do not want every save to chip away at its quality, when a program or template demands PNG, or when you plan to add transparency later in an editor. PNG stores pixels losslessly, so what you see after converting is exactly what is kept.
Drop your JPG files onto the upload area or paste them from the clipboard; PNG is already selected as the output. Leave “Preserve transparency” on, or switch it off to force a background colour. If you also need a different size, use “Resize” with pixel dimensions or a scale. Press “Convert to PNG” and download the files one by one or all together as a ZIP.
Photos are converted in your browser and never uploaded to a server. Bear in mind that converting to PNG does not bring back detail the JPG already lost to compression: it stops things getting worse, but it does not improve them. A PNG of a photograph is also usually much larger than the original JPG. EXIF data such as location is not copied across.
Frequently asked questions
Does converting JPG to PNG improve quality?
No. The PNG keeps the JPG’s pixels exactly as they are, artefacts included. What you gain is that quality stops dropping each time you save changes.
Why is the PNG bigger than the JPG?
PNG compresses losslessly and photographs contain a lot of subtle colour variation. A file two or three times larger is perfectly normal.
Will the PNG have a transparent background?
Not automatically: a JPG has no transparency, so the background stays whatever was in the photo. To remove it you will need an editor or a dedicated background-removal tool.
Can I convert both JPEG and JPG files?
Yes, they are the same format with two different extensions. The tool accepts both, along with any other image your browser can open.
