About this tool
ICO is the format of Windows icons and of the classic favicon.ico shown in browser tabs. With this tool you can turn your brand logo or any image into an ICO file ready to drop into your website’s root folder, use as a shortcut icon or bundle with a desktop application.
Drop your image, ideally square with a transparent background; ICO is already selected. Pick a single “Icon size” (16, 32, 48, 64, 128 or 256 px) or turn on “Multi-size” to pack all six into one file, which is the recommended approach for a favicon or a Windows icon. Press “Convert to ICO” and download the file.
Everything happens in your browser, so your logo is never uploaded to a server. Each size is stored as a PNG inside the ICO, a method supported by Windows Vista onwards and every current browser. The image is fitted to a square, so a non-square image will be stretched: crop it first. For macOS there is an ICNS option in the same format picker.
Frequently asked questions
What sizes should a favicon.ico contain?
16, 32 and 48 px are the usual trio. “Multi-size” also adds 64, 128 and 256 px so browsers and Windows can pick the best match.
Does my image need to be square?
Yes. Every icon size is square and the image is stretched to fill it, so a rectangular image will come out distorted. Crop it or add padding first.
Does the ICO keep transparency?
Yes. Each size is stored as a 32-bit PNG inside the ICO, alpha channel included.
Do I still need a favicon.ico?
Modern browsers accept PNG or SVG favicons, but many still request /favicon.ico by default, so it is worth having one in your site’s root.
