About this tool
This tool tells you which colour dominates an image and gives you its code ready to copy. It comes in handy when you want a background that matches a product shot, when you need the main colour of a logo or a cover, when you are sorting images by tone, or when you want the one colour that best sums up a photo for a button, banner or card.
Drag in the image, click to choose it or paste it. At the top you will see a large swatch of the dominant colour, roughly how much of the image it covers, and its HEX, RGB and HSL values, each with its own copy button. Below that sits the full palette of the image: switch to vibrant, light or warm colours, choose how many to show and export them as CSS variables.
Nothing is uploaded: the image is processed in your browser. The dominant colour is not a single pixel but the average of the largest group of similar colours, worked out on a scaled-down copy of the image. On photos with lots of subtle shading it can therefore shift slightly if you re-extract. If you need the exact colour of one spot, use the image colour picker instead.
Frequently asked questions
What is the dominant colour of an image?
It is the colour that covers the most area. Here it is found by grouping pixels of similar shades and taking the largest group.
Why is my photo’s dominant colour a grey or white?
In many photos the background takes up more room than the subject. If you want the most striking colour rather than the most common one, check the palette below with “Vibrant” or “Accent” selected.
How do I copy the HEX code of the dominant colour?
Press the copy button next to the HEX value in the top panel. You can also copy the RGB or HSL value.
Does it work with transparent PNGs?
Yes. Transparent and nearly transparent pixels are ignored, so the result only reflects the visible part of the image.
