About this tool
We have put a full photo editor on this page. It runs inside your browser, with nothing to install and no sign-up. It works with layers, masks, adjustment layers, layer styles, filters and type, and it opens and saves PSD files with their layers. Use it to retouch a photo before you post it, prepare an image for social media or the web, build a layered composition or open a PSD someone sent you when you have nothing else to view it with.
The editor is PhotoCraft, an open-source program. We serve it exactly as its authors publish it, unmodified, from our own server. The first time you open the page your browser downloads the program (about 12 MB); after that, editing happens on your computer. The photos you open are never uploaded to any server: opening uses the browser's file picker, and saving or exporting is a download.
Below we quote every menu by the name it has in the program, so you can follow along step by step.
How do you edit a photo online, step by step?
- Wait for the editor to finish loading. If you want more room, press «Open full screen» above the editor and it opens in a new tab.
- Press «Open…» on the start screen, or go to File › Open…, and pick the photo. You can also drop the image or PSD onto the editor.
- Fix light and colour in Image › Adjustments: «Levels…», «Curves…», «Hue/Saturation…» or «Brightness/Contrast…». If you want to be able to change it later, use an adjustment layer instead (see the next section).
- Change the size in Image › Image Size…, or crop with the «Crop Tool» in the toolbar on the left.
- Export with File › Export › Export As…, where you choose the format, quality, transparency and scale, with a preview and an estimate of the file size. If all you need is a PNG, use «Quick Export as PNG». Your browser downloads the file.
How do you work with layers, masks and adjustment layers?
Adjustment layers apply a correction without touching the original pixels. Create them in Layer › New Adjustment Layer and pick, for example, «Levels…», «Curves…», «Vibrance…», «Hue/Saturation…» or «Black & White…». You can hide them, reorder them or edit them again whenever you like.
Masks decide which part of a layer shows. Layer › Layer Mask has «Reveal All», «Hide All» and «Reveal Selection». If you select an area first, for example with Select › Subject, the mask shows only that area. According to the program's documentation, smart selection is computed on your machine, with no cloud service.
For shadows, strokes or glows, open Layer › Layer Style and choose, for example, «Drop Shadow…». Styles also work on type layers, which you create with the «Horizontal Type Tool» and which stay editable.
Filters live in the Filter menu, for example Filter › Blur › Gaussian Blur… or Filter › Sharpen › Unsharp Mask…. You see the result on the image before you accept it, and only inside the selection if there is one.
How do you open and save a PSD file?
A PSD opens just like a photo: with «Open…» or by dropping it onto the editor. According to the program's documentation, layers, masks, layer styles and type layers are loaded. It also opens PSB, layered TIFF, GIMP (XCF), Krita (.kra) and Paint.NET files, as well as PNG, JPEG, WebP, GIF, BMP, TGA, ICO and other flat formats.
To save the document with its layers, use File › Save As… and choose PSD. If what you need is an image to publish, use «Export As…» as in the first section. Either way, the file lands in your downloads folder.
The web version doesn't autosave and can't recover your work if you close the tab or reload the page. Save or export before you close it.
What if the editor doesn't load?
The editor needs an up-to-date browser with WebGPU or WebGL2, which recent versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari have. If the screen stays on «Loading PhotoCraft…», reload the page: the first download is the longest, and after that the browser reuses it.
To change the interface language, go to Edit › Preferences › Interface… and pick one from the language list. Anything not yet translated shows in English. The program keeps the preference in your browser.
Keyboard shortcuts reach the editor once you have clicked inside it. It opens on a phone, but it is designed for a computer with a mouse and a large screen.
We label it «Beta» because the program itself is at an early stage of development: some features may fail or not exist yet. If something doesn't work for you, let us know.
Frequently asked questions
Are my photos uploaded to a server?
No. Your browser downloads the program the first time and editing happens on your computer. Opening uses the browser's file picker and saving or exporting is a download; your photos never leave your device.
Which formats does it open and save?
It opens and saves layered PSD files, plus PSB, layered TIFF, PNG, JPEG, WebP, GIF, BMP and others. It also reads GIMP, Krita and Paint.NET files, and iPhone HEIC photos, which it can only open.
Which program does this editor use?
It uses PhotoCraft, an open-source program licensed under MIT or Apache-2.0. We serve it exactly as its authors publish it, unmodified, from the BAI server.
Can I change the interface language?
Yes. It starts in English, and in Edit › Preferences › Interface… you can pick another language, such as Spanish. Anything not yet translated shows in English.
