About this tool

We have put a full PDF program on this page. It runs inside your browser, with nothing to install and no sign-up. Use it to read a document, search its text, combine several PDFs into one, split a long one, pull out some pages, rotate, delete or reorder them, and protect the file with a password. It also shows comments, forms, layers and attachments.

The program is PdfCraft, which is open source. We serve it exactly as its authors publish it, unmodified, from our own server. The first time you open the page your browser downloads the program (about 16 MB); after that, everything happens on your computer. Your documents are never uploaded to any server: opening uses the browser's file picker, and saving is a download.

Almost everything is in the «All tools» panel on the left, or you can type its name in the «Find tools and commands» box at the top right.

How do you combine several PDFs into one?

According to the program's documentation, nothing gets lost along the way: links keep working, form fields stay fillable, layers keep their on/off state and attachments come along.

  1. Wait for the program to finish loading. If you want more room, press «Open full screen» above the editor and it opens in a new tab.
  2. In the «All tools» panel, press «Combine files».
  3. Press «Add files to combine» and pick the PDFs in the browser's file picker.
  4. Press «Combine». Each original file becomes a bookmark in the new PDF, with its own bookmarks nested underneath.
  5. Save with «Save». In the web version, saving downloads the PDF to your downloads folder.

How do you reorder, rotate or delete pages in a PDF?

Open the PDF with «Open file» on the start screen, or drop it onto the program. Then go to «Organize pages», which shows every page as a thumbnail at once.

Select pages with a click; Ctrl-click (⌘-click on a Mac) adds single pages to the selection and Shift-click picks a range. «Page options» has «Rotate», «Delete», «Insert» (for blank pages or pages from another file) and «Replace». You can also move pages earlier or later.

Every change can be undone with Ctrl+Z (⌘Z on a Mac), and the edit menu names the step you are about to undo. When it looks right, press «Save». The program appends your changes to the end of the file and leaves the original data untouched.

How do you split a PDF or pull out some pages?

To split a document, go to «Organize pages» and press «Split». You can cut it every so many pages, or just before the pages you choose. The program tells you how many files it will create before it does it.

If you only want some pages, select them and press «Extract»: they are copied into a new document and the original doesn't change. As with combining, the links, forms and attachments on those pages are kept.

Remember to save each new document. In the web version, every «Save» is a download.

How do you protect a PDF with a password?

The same group has «Remove hidden information» and «Remove security». If you open a protected PDF, the program asks for the password and honours the permissions its author set; the owner password lifts the restrictions. Whatever you change in an encrypted PDF is saved encrypted.

  1. Open the PDF you want to protect.
  2. In «All tools», press «Protect a PDF».
  3. Choose «Protect with password» and type the password.
  4. Save with «Save», then check that the downloaded PDF asks for the password when you open it.

Frequently asked questions

Are my PDFs uploaded to a server?

No. Your browser downloads the program the first time and your documents are processed on your computer. Opening uses the browser's file picker and saving is a download; your PDFs never leave your device.

Can I change text that is already in a PDF?

It isn't the right tool for that yet: its own authors say that editing existing text is not reliable yet. Where it works well is combining, splitting, reordering, commenting, filling in forms and protecting.

Which program does this editor use?

It uses PdfCraft, an open-source program licensed under MIT or Apache-2.0. We serve it exactly as its authors publish it, unmodified, from the BAI server.

Can I change the interface language?

Yes. Open «Menu» › Edit › «Preferences…» and pick a language under «Interface language». The change applies straight away and is kept in your browser.
